5 Hairstyles That Are Damaging Your Hair

Noticed more breakage around your hairline? Or more split ends? Sure, there are lots of reasons why damage happens but it could be your everyday hairstyle that’s seriously killing your strands. If you’re constantly pulling, dyeing or heat styling your hair then we’re definitely talking about you. It’s not as resilient as you think and if you don’t stop to give your hair a break then it’ll literally reach its breaking point. If you’re not sure where you’re going wrong we’ve put together a list of the biggest culprits to help you avoid a disaster.

High Ponytails

Who doesn’t go for a high ponytail when they’re running late in the morning? We totally get that this is a quick and easy, go-to look for most people but it can put a lot of tension on your hair. It’ll particularly affect the strands around your hairline and could cause breakage leaving you with lots of shorter pieces in the front. As much as switching to a scrunchie or loosening up your style will help we’d recommend keeping the high pony for when you really need to, rather than making it a regular occurrence.

Sleek Straight Hair

Regularly using heat tools on your hair is really damaging, so if you’re reaching for the straighteners every morning then it figures why your hair is breaking. The high temperatures will dry out your strands making them weaker over time which will eventually lead to split ends and breakage. We’d recommend going for heatless hairstyles as often as possible and regularly using hair masks to replace the moisture lost from styling.

Tight Braids

Tight braids put way too much stress on your strands as they’re constantly pulling. This can damage your hair follicles and lead to hair loss and breakage if you’re regularly braiding your hair. One of the telltale signs is little bumps where the hair is pulling up your skin so if you see this then you know you’ve gone way too far and should loosen them up!

A Messy Bun

If you’re securing the lengths of your hair in a tight elastic then this can cause snapping and shedding, especially if it’s tight. So, if you’re rocking a messy bun regularly then we’d recommend using a scrunchie or an invisibobble instead while making sure to keep your hair as loose as possible. This will help to reduce the amount of tension on your strands and your hairline.

Beach Waves

We all love fresh from the sea hair but trying to create the same look with salt sprays can be really damaging. Salt sprays dry out your hair which is great for creating texture but over time it will weaken it, leading to damage. You can find salt sprays that are balanced with nourishing ingredients like Aloe Vera but it’s still good to keep them to a minimum. We’d recommend trying a salt-free spray instead like the IGK Beach Club Volumizing Texture Spray that won’t be as drying.
