What To Do If You Hate Your New Haircut
Last updated on

We’ve all been there. Staring at our reflection in an unflattering salon mirror – wondering why on earth we chose an extreme new style.
From regrets about bangs and jet-black hair dye to chopping it WAY too short, at Milk & Blush we’ve experienced just about everything.
It’s heartbreaking. And it can be hard to know what to do next.
Do you tell the stylist? Wait for it to grow? Or hide inside your house for the foreseeable future?
First off, take a breath. Try to take some time to recalibrate and ask yourself – is it really that bad? Sometimes change can be shocking and just takes some getting used to. Try to think of the potential new looks and styles you can create with your new cut.
If the answer is still “yes, it really is THAT bad”, then we’ve put together a few of our best tips for when you hate your new haircut.
Tell Your Stylist
Our biggest tip is to be honest about how you feel while you’re still at the salon.
Is it awkward? Absolutely.
But it’s better to let them know before you leave, so they can try and fix it.
If it’s already too late, don’t be ashamed to go back and tell them either. Explaining exactly what you’re unhappy with will allow them to make some changes to make your cut more wearable.
Just make sure that you approach this convo calmly. Getting angry doesn’t help anyone!
Try Out Different Styles
It might not be the hairstyle itself, but the initial shock and how the hairdresser has styled it that’s left you not loving your new look.
Sometimes, simply washing and restyling your hair can make you feel much better. Especially if it’s too straight or you’ve got a very voluminous blow dry.
You can also try embracing the new style – and even invest in some new products and accessories to complement your shorter do.
Trying your old tricks with your new style might be why it’s not working.
Experiment with Hair Accessories
One of the girls in the Milk & Blush office recently got curtain bangs and instantly regretted it. Her best tip? Hair accessories.
You can hide your bangs easily with bobby pins, hair clips or hairbands. And, luckily, they’re so on-trend right now.
Pick up a few things that match your personal style and experiment with a few ways you can style your hair using them.
Pinterest is also a great place for hair inspiration!
Invest In Professional-Grade Styling Products
If you want your hair to grow back quickly, you need to take good care of it.
Using products that nourish your hair, protect your colour and replenish moisture will help to keep your hair healthy.
If you’re trying to grow out short hair, we’d also recommend getting a good heat protectant, like the GHD Heat Protect Spray. This will prevent your hair from being damaged while drying or styling.
You’ll also want to use a replenishing hair mask, like the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, to keep your hair topped up with moisture.
What to Do if Your New Haircut is Too Short?
One thing that’s hard to fix in the salon is if your hair has been cut too short.
Whether the stylist went way shorter than you wanted, or you impulsively chopped and realised too late that it’s not the style for you – what do you do next?
Try these quick fixes:
Braids Hide Everything
If it’s layers, or the overall cut, that you’re not happy with, braids are a perfect solution for hiding it until your hair grows.
You can even braid really short hair, so this is a great option for everyone.
Dutch braids are perfect for this trick. They’ll help to catch all your hair, starting as close to your hairline as you need, while using small sections.
Don't Neglect It
We get it. If you’ve had a really bad experience, the thought of another haircut is terrifying. But you need to make sure you’re looking after your locks as they grow into something more your style.
It might sound counterproductive. But for your hair to stay healthy, it’s important to get regular haircuts. This removes split ends and lets you keep on top of your roots with some extra colour.
Having a hair disaster means you need to give your hair even more attention than normal. And trust us, it’ll be worth it in the long run.
Add Extensions
Hair extensions add instant length and volume to your shorter hair – whether it’s for daily wear or those glamorous occasions.
Clip-ins can be the perfect accessory for instant cover-ups, while letting you care for your hair at night while it grows out.
At Milk & Blush, our extensive range of beautiful hair extensions are made with 100% Remy Human Hair and comes in shades, lengths and application methods to suit everyone.
