Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Always Using A Heat Protectant

Just like your natural hair you need to make sure you’re protecting your hair extensions from heat damage when you’re styling. Using too much can lead to breakage and as your  extensions don’t get the same supply of natural oils as your own hair you need to be extra careful. Make sure to prep your set with a heat protectant everytime you style it and don’t turn up your tools any higher than 185°C. Here at M+B we love the GHD Heat Protect Spray for this which is really lightweight and makes your hair look super shiny.

Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Storing Them In Their Box

Rather than leaving your hair extensions loose it’s way better to store them in their box when you’re not wearing them. This will help to avoid any tangles which can lead to damage and knots. You just need to roll them up into a loop, pop them in their hair net and then into their little compartment in the box. It’s super simple and you can use the other side to store your hair accessories and elastics. Alternatively if you’ve curled your set and you want them to hold the style you can use a trouser hanger to hang them up but just make sure not to clamp it down on the clips.

Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Investing In A Loop Brush

We’d definitely recommend using a loop brush for your hair extensions over your regular hair brush to avoid causing any damage. Loop brushes have looped bristles which are super gentle on your hair and won’t pull or snap your strands. It’s also a really good shout to brush your extensions each time you take them out and before you pop them in the box to keep them tangle free. Just make sure to brush from the ends up!

Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Avoiding These

Some hair products can be really drying so we’d definitely recommend avoiding them when it comes to styling your hair extensions. Things like salt sprays and dry shampoo for example can really dry out your set and will buildup on the hair to make it look dull. Instead try a texturising spray for some extra volume like the Bumble and Bumble Dryspun Texture Spray which is salt free and uses wheat protein to nourish your hair.

Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Keeping Them Dry

One of the biggest myths about clip-in hair extensions is that you need to wash them just as much as your regular hair but this definitely isn’t true! In fact getting your extensions wet can really dry them out so we recommend avoiding this as much as possible. If you only use super lightweight products like we recommend above, you shouldn't get too much product build up that you feel you need to wash out anyway. Instead it’s a way better shout to revive them with some Silicone Spritz which will help to replenish any moisture lost to heat styling and will totally refresh your set. You’ll only need to do this every few months but it’ll help to soften the hair, detangle the lengths and add loads of shine.

We’ve got a full tutorial here on how to use silicone spritz that’s super useful and worth bookmarking if you’re a hair extension fan. Just click here to read.

Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions By… Taking Them Out

Going to bed in your extensions is an absolute no as all that tossing and turning can put way too much pressure on the clips. This can damage your natural hair in the same way as wearing a super tight pony and it’ll create loads of knots in the hair too. It’s exactly the same for exercising and you don’t want to get them super sweaty either as we don’t recommend washing them. Instead take them out before you go to sleep and click here for some gym hairstyle ideas that you can create with your natural hair.

These tips are a great way to keep your extensions looking just as perfect as they were when you bought them and they’re also super easy to follow. So no excuses! We’d also recommend checking out our post on how to stop your hair extensions from matting which has some really useful tips.
