Case Study: The "Extension Ledge" Mistake That Ruined One Bride's Dream Fairy Hair

We all have an idea of what hair we’d like on our wedding day, and for Sarah, this was an ethereal, whimsical look with super long, curly tresses. However, her dream wedding hair was giving more fairytale failure than fairytale ending due to her stylist not taking her natural hair into account and not having a trial beforehand.

Inspiration vs. reality

When planning her wedding hair, Sarah drew inspiration from social media apps like Pinterest and opted for long, wavy hair with a few details. 

Sarah explained: “I really wanted a fairy-esque look for the whole wedding vibe, including my hair. I made sure to find a style that complemented the dress and went with the venue’s decor. The hairstyle I found was the perfect fit.

“On the wedding day, when my hair was first finished, I felt lovely. The style was exactly what I wanted: curly, long, and with the added details that made the hair feel complete. It really suited the vibe of the whole wedding.”

Despite initially loving her wedding hair, Sarah noticed it fell flat after the ceremony. Once the style dropped, it became clear that her extensions were not blended well, especially as her natural hair is thick. 

“I hate any wedding pictures or videos where you can see my hair! It was obvious that my natural hair was separate from the extensions due to the style not lasting. It’s ALL I can see when I look at the photos.

“My extensions were a key part of the hair, and they weren’t the problem. The style and blend were the issue. I expected the stylist to blend them in seamlessly; she was the professional. Instead, my hair's natural thickness didn’t seem to be taken into account for this style. The stylist even left some extensions out, claiming I didn’t need them! These extra ones could have helped hold the style and blend with my natural hair better.” 

How to seamlessly blend clip-in extensions with thick hair (and keep the blend when the style drops)

The biggest risk of adding extensions to hair that is naturally thick or blunt is the ‘ledge’ effect, where the weight of the natural hair visibly sits on top of the extensions. Achieving the perfect blend is extremely important. When curls drop, the texture difference between the natural hair and extensions immediately exposes this ‘ledge’.  This is exactly what Sarah experienced on her wedding day. Below are some tips on how to prevent this issue. 

1. Prep with gravity-defying products

Hair dropping can be unavoidable. However, natural hair and extensions must drop together, at the same rate, to keep a seamless blend:

• Avoid heavy products: Do not use heavy oils or serums on either the natural hair or the extensions. These can add extra weight to the hair. 
• Build texture: Instead, prep both the natural hair and extensions with a lightweight volume mousse or texture spray before styling.
• Secure the base: Backcomb the roots of the natural hair where the extensions will clip in, and add root volume powder to provide friction. This prevents the extensions from slipping down, which worsens the ledge effect.

2. Hide the hair ‘ledge’

The placement of hair extensions matters. Clipping extensions directly underneath the thickest part of thick hair is a common mistake which can really emphasise this ‘ledge’ appearance. Hiding the lowest, bluntest section of the natural hair can help:

• The nape braid: Section a 1-to-2-inch band of hair at the nape of the neck, braid it flat against the scalp, and secure it with hair grips. This step removes a bulk of thickness from the bottom line of the natural hair, creating a flat, seamless anchor for the first and heaviest extension weft to sit on.

3. Intertwine the curls

Curly styles add texture and help the blend, but as curls relax throughout the day, it’s important that the natural hair and extensions are treated as one:

• Fuse the hair: When curling, take a section of natural hair and extension hair and curl them together. This fuses them into the same wave pattern, meaning when the style relaxes, they drop into one another rather than separating into obvious layers.

4. Set and cool completely

Extensions hold a curl differently from natural hair, making the cooling process critical for longevity:

• Pin the curls: As soon as you release a section from the hair tool, pin the intertwined curl into a barrel curl.
• Let it cool: Do not touch or brush the curls until the entire head is completely cool. Hair sets as it cools, and cooling the natural hair and extensions together in barrel curls can help lock the blend in place.

5. Get a strategic trim ahead of time

Brand-new extensions rarely blend perfectly with a thick or blunt haircut without customisation. A trim ahead of time can help prep the hair for the wedding day: 

• Blended layers: Before the wedding, the bride should wear her extensions to a trial appointment. The stylist can thin slide-cut (sliding partially open scissors down the hair shaft) or point-cut (cutting vertically or at a slight diagonal into the ends of the hair) the extensions while they are in her hair to seamlessly match the natural layers.
• Remove the weight: Gently thinning the ends of the natural hair or tapering the extensions removes the heavy weight block that can cause the visible split.

Hair hindsight

Sarah’s hair looked beautiful initially, but unfortunately, her hair type was not considered when it came to how the style would last and how the extensions would blend.

While external factors like weather can affect a hairstyle, the mix of humidity and rain on Sarah’s wedding day definitely won’t have helped the style's longevity. However, her regret came down to the execution of the style. In this situation, if the natural hair was still too thick, even with all the extensions in, and there wasn’t time to purchase more, pivoting the style to hide the hair's natural weight could have saved the look.

Sarah added, “I wish the stylist had suggested different styles to me to avoid this problem, such as adding a braid or putting half of the hair up. This could have made a big difference to the hair blending and lasting. I told her on the day to do whatever she thought was needed; she was the professional after all. I trusted her to do what was best.

“In hindsight, I wish I had had a trial beforehand, as this might have made the issue more apparent to the stylist and me, and we could have added more extensions or changed the style slightly. If we did this, I would have felt so much better on the day and could look back at my wedding photos without regretting my hair! If I could redo it, I’d have added a long plait at the back to help blend my natural hair better, whilst still achieving the fairy vibes I wanted.”

We asked Sarah what one piece of advice she’d give to other brides is.

“Definitely book a trial beforehand! And if you are wearing extensions, try different ways of styling, placements and wearing them to see how they hold up, so the stylist can do what is needed to help natural hair hold up the same.”
