DIY Shampoo & Conditioner Bars
Packaging is OUT! Seriously, unless you’ve been living under a rock then you’ll be aware that everyone is trying their best to use less. Less packaging, less of the harmful ingredients and less waste. With 120 billion units of plastic packaging going into landfill every year, it figures that changes need to be made. Here at M+B we’re no different and have been thinking of fun ways to make our hair routines a little more sustainable.
One of the more planet-friendly products we love are shampoo and conditioner bars. They’re your everyday hair heroes in solid form, that don’t require a plastic bottle but still pack a hair punch. Inspired by the ones we use at home we’ve decided to create our own using some simple ingredients that are amazing for your hair. Let’s go...
Shampoo Bar Recipe
Shea Butter (3 tbsp)
Argan Oil (1 tbsp)
Vitamin E Oil (1 tbsp)
Soap Base (1 tbsp)
Peppermint Essential Oil (20 drops)
Lavender Essential Oil (20 drops)
Start by melting your soap base in the microwave. You can do this in 30-second intervals until it’s completely liquid.
Mix the shea butter, argan oil, vitamin e oil and the soap base together in a bowl. Shea butter is really moisturising and the argan and vitamin e oil will nourish your hair to balance the cleansing properties of the soap.
Add 20 drops of peppermint essential oil into the mixture, this is great for stimulating your hair follicles to promote hair growth. You can then add 20 drops of lavender essential oil, this also stimulates hair growth and will give your shampoo bar a really relaxing scent. Once all your ingredients are in the bowl you want to mix it thoroughly until there are no lumps. If you need to, you can pop it back in the microwave in 30-second intervals to melt the soap.
Pour your shampoo mix into a container and pop it in the fridge for at least 3 hours or until it’s completely solid.
Take your shampoo out of the Tupperware and cut it into small pieces. You’re done!
Conditioner Bar Recipe
Shea Butter (3 tbsp)
Mango Butter (3 tbsp)
Bees Wax (1 tbs)
Lavender Essential Oil (30 drops)
Argan Oil (1 tsp)
Rose Powder (5 grams)
Melt the beeswax in the microwave in 30-second intervals until it’s completely liquid.
Add the shea butter, mango butter and beeswax into a bowl and mix them thoroughly. You may need to pop the mixture back into the microwave in 30-second intervals until it’s completely liquified.
Add 30 drops of lavender essential oil and the argan oil into the mixture. Argan oil is great for fighting dandruff and will really moisturise your strands.
Add your rose powder into the bowl and mix it in thoroughly until it’s fully combined. Rose powder is great for promoting hair growth and stimulating your hair follicles.
Pour the mixture into a container and refrigerate it for at least 3 hours or until it’s completely solid.
Take your bar out of the container and cut it into smaller pieces that you can use in the shower.
