Here at M+B we’re pretty obsessed with hair care so it figures that as a team we try out a lot of new products. To make us feel better about our groaning bathroom cabinets we thought it would be cool to share some of the things we’ve found as part of a new series. We’re calling it Tried & Tested and the plan is to give you honest reviews on some of the weirdest and most hyped products out there.

This month we’re testing out the Babyliss Pro Perfect Curl which is by far the weirdest curling tool we’ve ever had in the office. It basically clamps down on your hair and sucks it up into the barrel before letting it drop and yes it’s as scary as it sounds...

It claims to: This automatic curler gently styles your hair and creates a perfect, uniform curl every time. The Perfect Curl also has a ceramic curling chamber which evenly heats your hair and helps to smooth the cuticle for frizz free styling. You can also choose different time and direction settings to change the curl pattern and switch up your look.

How to use it: You’ll need to start by changing the settings on the side to get the right curl pattern for you. There are three time settings to choose from including 8,10 or 12 seconds which affects the tightness of the curl. So 8 seconds will be a loose curl and 12 seconds will be a ringlet. You can also change the direction of the curls so either left, right or auto for either side of your face or if you want to alternate each curl for a more relaxed look. Lastly you’ll need to use the lower or higher heat setting depending on the thickness of your hair.

Once you’ve set everything up you’ll need to prep your hair with a heat protectant before you start curling. We’d recommend the TRESemmé Protect Heat Defence Styling Spray because it protects up to 230°C which is the higher heat setting on this curl tool. You can then section off your hair at the nape of your neck and start curling! Just take a small piece of hair and place it in the gap inside the curling chamber. The chamber has a built in sensor that will tell you if you’ve put in too much hair or if it’s tangled to avoid any disasters. You then want to clamp down the tool and let it suck up your hair inside the chamber. Once your hair is inside you need to wait for the three quick beeps before letting your curl drop.

Rhian’s thoughts: I think it's amazing! Especially for extensions as it keeps your natural hair and the wefts together when they’re being curled. Sometimes when you use a barrel your own hair can fall away from the heat and you get these sticky out bits which can ruin your blend. It’s also really easy to use but you definitely have to respect the tool and go by the rules because it's easy to make a mistake, so don’t use it if you’re half asleep! I think the outcome is really good though and the curls look amazing.

Christy’s thoughts: I love this! It was so easy to use and it’s perfect if you’re lazy when it comes to hairstyling. I tried it out on my Milk + Blush 24-26” Set and it was way easier than trying to wrap all that hair around a barrel. It also creates really uniformed curls so if you’re going for polished waves it’s an easy way to get them. The only bad thing is that if you use it the wrong way around your hair gets stuck. I found this out the hard way! It’s not that clear as there’s only a small sign on the top showing you the right direction so you really need to concentrate to avoid a disaster. It also heats up to 230°C so you’ll need to use a heavy duty heat protector and I definitely wouldn’t recommend using it everyday.
