Signs It’s Time to Get a New Set of Hair Extensions

It’s a sad time when the day comes. You've given your hair extensions all the love in the world, cared for them extensively to keep them looking and feeling healthy and they've even chaperoned you to parties, dates and other memorable occasions.

But sadly, there comes a time when you have to say goodbye to your favourite set. Whether they’re shedding too much hair, starting to split or simply don’t feel as soft and fresh as when you bought them.

It’s not all bad news, though – as it means you’re able to shop for a brand-new set of hair extensions and enjoy a fresh, full look at your future events.

When to Buy New Hair Extensions

It can be tricky to tell exactly when it’s time to replace your hair extensions – especially as we often become so attached to our favourite set and even worry that we won’t find that perfect match again elsewhere.

But there are some telltale signs that your extensions are damaged beyond repair and it’s time to invest in a new set.

Here, we look at the common signs it’s time to buy new hair extensions…

They’re starting to break off or split

If your hair extensions are starting to shed or are even experiencing split ends, it’s likely a sign you’re neglecting your aftercare routine.

Broken or split hair extensions may be down to sleeping in your set – which causes unwanted friction and matting on your locks – as well as using excessive heat. So, it might be time to put the straighteners down and try some heatless styles.

Some sets may be damaged beyond repair, though – in which case it’s time to find your perfect new set.

They’re permanently frizzy

Just like your natural hair, hair extensions can become frizzy when they’re not getting enough moisture. This is usually caused by using too many heat styling tools or products, without treating them with nourishing oils.

You may be able to revive your extensions with our Silicone Spritz spray – but if they’re permanently frizzy, it may be time to replace them.

They no longer move

Have you reached the point where you no longer need to restyle or re-curl your extensions when you wear them, because there’s so much product already in them, they pretty much don’t move?

If you’ve treated your extensions with our leave-in conditioner and they’re still stuck near-solid in place, it’s time to for a new set!

They’re covered in leftover products

If you find mounds of hairspray at the top of your weft – from too much hairspray and back combing during previous wear – they may be beyond repair.

You can try to revive your extensions by washing them with our Silicone Spritz. But, sometimes, too much baked-in product means it’s time for a new set.

They feel flimsy

Do your hair extensions feel less stable and secure than when you bought them? If you’ve ever slept in your set, you may notice they feel flimsier than before.

This is because, as we toss and turn throughout the night, the hair can become matted and tug on the clips. And as they become weaker, the strands may begin to feel weak and even fall out.

Unfortunately, this can damage your set beyond repair and may mean it’s time to find your new favourite extensions.

They’re just not as soft as before

Maybe you feel like your extensions just don’t feel as silky soft as they once did. This is likely down to follicles becoming dry from heat tools or products.

Try our Silicone Spritz leave-in conditioner to hydrate and soften them. But if they’re dry beyond repair, it’s time to invest in your next set.

When Not to Buy New Hair Extensions

Before buying a new set of hair extensions, it may be possible to revive your current set – including gently washing and brushing through them with a wide-tooth comb.

But the best way to avoid buying a new set is to practise proper hair extension aftercare, looking after your set during and after each wear to avoid matting, drying and other types of damage.
