Ok, so unless you’ve been living under a rock you must be pretty aware that the world is cracking down on how much plastic we’re using. This is especially true of the haircare industry, which has been singled out as the biggest offender. With all that washing, dyeing, heat styling and product spraying; we’re creating a pretty big footprint with our routines. In light of this, it figures that brands and consumers are making big changes towards more sustainable products and ingredients.

That being said we totally get that switching to a sustainable hair routine overnight is a very big ask. This is why we’ve done some digging and found a few quick ways you can start making your hair routine more sustainable that aren’t too tricky. Let’s go...

1.Make Sure All Your Products Come In Recyclable Packaging

This is the most basic thing you can do but it will make a big difference in the long run. Many products come in recyclable packaging already but it’s worth making sure that yours do and that they’re 100% recyclable. Some pump bottles and sprays aren’t, so even if the main bottle is, you’re still having to throw plastic into the bin. This is why it’s super important to look out for the mobius symbol on the back of the packaging, so that you know it can be recycled when you’re done.

2.Switch To Packaging Free Products

We totally get that it’s impossible to do this for all of your products but things like shampoo and conditioner are readily available packaging free. LUSH make some of the best ones, including their Honey I Washed My Hair bar which is toffee scented. It’ll help to soften and add shine to your hair and will last up to 100 washes. We also love their BIG solid conditioner, which is really nourishing and has a vanilla, jasmine and bergamot scent.

3.Make Your Own Products

This is such a fun way to be more sustainable and you can reuse your old hair care packaging in the process to house all the cute things you make. There are DIY versions of pretty much every hair product and it’s also a great way of cutting out nasty chemicals from your routine. We have a few recipes here that are super easy to make and really affordable but there are loads of videos on youtube too with step by step tutorials.

4.Always Recycle Your Bathroom Products

If you’re putting all of your beauty products in the bathroom bin once they’re done then chances are they aren’t making it into the recycling. It’s super important that you make the effort to pop them in the green bin as recycling one shampoo bottle will save enough energy to toast 3 rounds of bread!

5.Shower Less

Between the amount of water you use and the amount of power you need to heat it, showering less will really help to reduce your footprint. We get that you want your hair to look fresh but just stretching the time between washes to an extra day can make a big difference. Even if you can’t skip the shampoo, you could try using a leave-in conditioner rather than conditioning your hair in the shower. This will cut the amount of water you’re using in no time but will give you the exact same results. Washing your hair less will also help you to hold onto your colour, meaning way less trips to the salon!

Feeling inspired? We hope so! If you have any tips and tricks of how you’re being more sustainable with your routines we’d love to hear them too. So make sure you leave them in the comments :) Happy hair mask making M+B babes!
