How To Prep Your Hair For A Big Night Out

Hair-Straightener-Mistakes

Got a big night out coming up? Whether it’s prom, a wedding, or just drinks with your friends we’re pretty sure you’ll want your hairstyle to last. So, to give it maximum staying power, we’re sharing all the steps you need to prep your hair for a big night out…

Step 1: Hydrate

Firstly, it's way better to wash your hair the night before you go out as freshly washed strands are way harder to style. As you’re washing your hair the night before we’d definitely recommend applying a hair mask too. This will help to hydrate your hair and protect against frizziness while repairing damage and improving your hair health. For really glossy strands we’d go for the Kristin Ess Strand Healing, Reconstructive Moisture Mask which helps to smooth over the damage, hide split ends and nourish your hair.

Step 2: Use A Primer

Before you blowdry your hair you need to apply a heat protectant and it’s worth going for one that will help to give your hair some staying power. We’d try the L'Oreal Stylista Blowdry Styling Cream which protects your hair from damage up to 230°C and will hold your hair in place for up to 72 hours. It’s also enriched with grapeseed oil to moisturise your hair and fight against frizz.

Step 3: Smooth

A blowdry will help to smooth your hair and add loads of shine to perfectly prep it for whatever night out hairstyle you go for. You want to blow dry your hair using a round, boar bristle brush and concentrate the air flow down your hair to smooth the cuticle. This will help to give you a really shiny finish and if you’re prone to frizz it’ll help to keep your hair under control.

Step 4: Prep Your Set

If you know you’re not going to have much time to get ready then it might be a good shout to prep your hair extensions the night before. Pre-curling them will save you so much time, as that way you’ll only have to worry about curling your natural hair. We’d also recommend pinning each curl as you’re working through your extensions to give them maximum staying power and to leave brushing out the curls until they’re clipped into your hair.

Step 5: Let Your Hair Cool

When you’re ready to style your hair you want to make sure you’re giving it time to set in place so that it lasts. If you’re straightening your hair then use a comb in front of the straighteners to make sure there aren’t any tangles. This will give you a really sleek finish and once you’re done you can use some flat clips to hold the front of your hair in place as it cools. This will prevent you getting kinks around your hairline. If you’re curling it then make sure to hold your hair in your hand for a few seconds when it comes off the barrel or pin up each curl so that they can set in place. Once you’re done make sure to set everything in place with a strong hold hairspray and try to avoid playing with it as much as possible!

Step 6: Dry Shampoo Your Roots

If you’re planning on dancing then you’re going to need to prep your scalp against the extra heat. Spraying it with dry shampoo will help to form a barrier between your hair and your scalp so that a little sweat won’t ruin your hairstyle. It’ll also help to add some extra volume at your roots to give you the illusion of thicker hair which is perfect if you’re planning on taking pictures.

Step 7: Finish With Some Shine Spray

Taking pictures on a night out is pretty mandatory these days, so you want to make sure your hair is looking seriously photogenic. One of our top tips is to use a shine spray, which will make your hair look really glossy and healthy. You can use as much of this as you like but make sure to focus it on your mid lengths and ends to avoid weighing down your roots.
